Federal Reserve Lowers Interest Rates for Second Time This Calendar Year During Financial Instability

The United States monetary authority lowered borrowing costs on Wednesday, representing the second rate cut in the current year amid financial volatility stemming from the government closure and tariff policies.

Move Arrives at Unprecedented Time for Federal Reserve

The move to cut the key rate by a quarter point to a range of 4% to 3.75% arrives at an unprecedented juncture for the Fed. The authority has been under significant strain to cut rates despite persistent inflation.

Fed Statement Highlights Labor Market Shifts

In a announcement, the Federal Reserve said that the unemployment rate had increased but stays modest. “Employment growth have decelerated,” the statement notes. “Inflation has risen and stays moderately high.”

Government Shutdown Hinders Fed’s Job

The ongoing government stoppage, now among the lengthiest in US history, has also hindered the central bank’s task. Gathering of key financial statistics has been indefinitely halted as employees at the Bureau of Labor Statistics are furloughed during the shutdown.

Data Gap Affects Monetary Moves

The Federal Reserve typically analyzes labor statistics to determine labor market conditions, such as the number of employment gains added to the market and the present jobless percentage. The last jobs report was released in early September, before the shutdown, and gave a somewhat gloomy overview of the employment scene in the previous month.

The number of jobs added to the market in the summer month was lower by more than 100,000 since the spring, and unemployment rose to 4.3% – the highest since 2021.

Private Data Show Ongoing Decline

Though BLS was set to release September’s employment data in early October, it suspended its release once the shutdown began. Employment data company ADP reported recently that the business segment eliminated 32,000 positions in September, a sign that the employment landscape is still decelerating.

“Supply as well as demand for workers has declined quite sharply,” Fed chair the Fed chairman said recently, which he had earlier attributed comes from immigration and tariff policies.

Price Data Shows Moderate Rise

Though the bureau’s jobs report has been suspended, the bureau still issued its price statistics for September that showed that costs are going up, albeit slowly. Prices increased 3% over the last year, the highest since January. In April, the yearly price increase was two point three percent, the lowest it has been since three years ago. The Fed’s target price increase is 2%.
